Intro

What can you do with the Environmental Yardstick for Pesticides?

The Environmental Yardstick for Pesticides (EYP) provides an overview of the environmental impact of all authorised pesticides in The Netherlands and makes it possible to compare different pesticides. This way the least harmful measure can be chosen.

The Environmental Yardstick for Pesticides for field crops shows for each authorised pesticide (1 kg/ha or 1 l/ha pesticide) the following data:

percentage active substance
environmental impact points for aquatic organisms (surface water)
environmental impact points for terrestrial life
environmental impact points for infiltration to groundwater
risk for beneficial organisms (biological controllers and pollinators)
risk for human health by application

The Environmental Yardstick for Pesticides for cultivation under glass shows for each authorised pesticide (1 kg/ha or 1 l/ha pesticide) the following data:

percentage active matter
environmental impact points for surface water by space treatments
environmental impact points for surface water by other application techniques

This website provides the Environmental Yardstick for Pesticides and necessary information. Furthermore an overview of all pesticides and subscriptions is given.

Actualization

The Environmental Yardstick for Pesticides will be renewed four times a year. Because of that recently authorised pesticides might not be included directly.

Other development

At the moment Alterra and RIVM are developing a National (Dutch) Environmental Indicator for pesticides. This indicator is meant for the evaluation of the current policy regarding protection of crops, which goal is to achieve a 95% reduction on the environmental impact in 2010. Although the national environmental indicator assumes identical risks for aquatic organisms, terrestrial life and groundwater compared to the EYP, this national instrument is not useful for application at farm level. The EYP is a useful indicator for farmers. Regularly there is a consultation between CLM, Alterra and RIVM to synchronize these instruments.
